37th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2018

The first qualification rounds of the 37th Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition will start on 16 February 2018. Registrations for all international qualifying rounds of this prestigious opera singing competition will be open from January to May. In total, there will be 70 qualifying rounds worldwide. The finals gala concert will take place on 10 June 2018 at the Dzintari Concert Hall in Jurmala, Latvia.

“We are thrilled that we are once again able to provide an opportunity to young people to showcase their talent in front of a large audience and start an international career”, say the competition’s general managers Isabella Gabor and Holger Bleck. In addition to the three main prizes, an audience prize as well as a media prize will be awarded. However, the Belvedere Singing Competition offers a lot more to young talents besides the possibility of winning prizes. The jury members of the final rounds are exclusively opera and casting directors of international renowned opera houses, who award additional engagements to the participants. Numerous singers’ agents and representatives of international opera and concert houses visit the final rounds as observers. This is what makes this competition such an exceptional experience.

The Belvedere Singing Competition was the steppingstone for numerous internationally successful singers, who today perform at the world’s most renowned opera and concert houses. By entering the competition, they did not only earn prize money but also received permanent engagements. Last year’s winner Aigul Akhmetshina already charmed opera-goers as Bizet’s Carmen in London, where she is now an ensemble member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. In Austria, she will be debuting at this year’s Carinthian Summer Music Festival.

Another musical whizz kid is soprano singer Lise Davidson, one of the 2015 winners, who has since performed leading parts at renowned opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bayreuth Festival, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opera Zürich, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Wiener Staatsoper as well as at Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Wexford Festival Opera. Sponsors play an important role in the success of the competition, which is solely financed by patrons and music enthusiasts. “They not only give young people an opportunity to follow their dream career but also make a valuable contribution to the continued existence of high quality music theatre”, says Bleck. Guntars Ķirsis, Director of the Dzintari Concert Hall, is happy about this collaboration. "The International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition is an important springboard for young opera singers into a professional career and well known as ´wall street of voices´. We are proud to host the final rounds of this renowned international singing competition for the first time in Latvia.“
